Discover the Roots of Halloween at Danbury’s Children’s Samhain Event

by | Oct 12, 2024

Join us for an unforgettable experience at the Children’s Samhain “Irish Halloween” event on Sunday, October 20th, from 2 to 3:30 pm at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, 6 Lake Ave in Danbury, CT. This celebration is not just another Halloween party; it’s a journey into the rich traditions of Samhain, a festival that has shaped our modern Halloween celebrations.

What to Expect

This event is designed for children aged 8 to 12 and promises a delightful mix of music, stories, crafts, and refreshments. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to explore the origins of Halloween while engaging in fun activities that spark creativity and learning. The event is limited to just 24 children, so early registration is essential! Admission is only $5, plus a small Eventbrite fee, with proceeds going towards materials for the crafts. Additional donations are welcome and appreciated.

Meet the Leaders

Two remarkable local talents will guide the festivities:

  • Margaret Fitzgerald, a beloved musician and music teacher with over 43 years of experience, will lead the children through storytelling and rhythmic fun. Expect some lively songs and maybe even a dance or two as she reveals the fascinating Irish roots of Halloween. Her passion for music will surely inspire the young participants!
  • Elizabeth Popiel, an accomplished scenic designer and craft expert, will help kids create creature masks inspired by ancient Celtic lore. With her background in theatre design and a flair for props artisanry, Elizabeth will ensure that every child leaves with a unique piece of art. Her experience as an art director for major productions adds extra excitement to this creative adventure.

Discovering Samhain

So why celebrate Samhain? This ancient festival marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Traditionally, it was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred during this time, allowing spirits to roam freely. By participating in this event, children will learn how these age-old customs have influenced our current Halloween traditions—think costumes, trick-or-treating, and even spooky stories!

A Fun-Filled Afternoon

The afternoon will be packed with engaging activities that include:

  • Storytelling sessions where kids can gather around and listen to tales from Irish folklore.
  • Craft stations where they can create their masks and capes.
  • Refreshments to keep everyone energized for all the fun!

And don’t forget about the grand finale—a Halloween parade around the GDICC! Kids can show off their creations while enjoying a sense of community spirit.
